The November Meeting of EAA Chapter 24 will be 2 PM on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Red Stewart Airfield, Waynesville OH
Chapter Business:
Election of 2009 Officers. A motion was made at the October meeting to continue with the current officers for 2009. Nominations/volunteers for offices will be held before the election of officers.
Dues for 2009 are due. Dues are $20.00 per person and $25.00 for family. Bring cash of a check to the meeting. If you can't attend the meeting send a check payable to EAA 284 to Rich Corbett, 7723 Tylers Place Blvd #208, West Chester OH 45069
Holiday Party Anyone? In past years the Chapter met for an annual Christmas/Holiday party at the Kings Island Inn. Traditionally this was for the whole family and was held on the evening of the 3rd Saturday in January. This practice was discontinued several years ago for basically two reason. First, the area experienced rather poor weather on the chosen day, primarily snow and icy conditions made travel too hazardous. Secondly, the chapter experienced a significant change in membership with no history of attending the annual party. It may be time to renew this practice. I was particularly impress with the help of family members during the TDFI. I think that a time for us and families to get to get to know each other a little better and mingle in less stressful circumstances might be a good idea. We will discuss this at the November meeting
I received a brief note for the winner of the YAK ride in our TDFI raffle. The note included a photo.
We had a great visit to Ross Field last month to see Bob Wilson's Whitman Tailwind and Pietenpol project. Ross Field is a small private strip. The suggestion was made to hold a chapter picnic here in future years in October as a way of avoiding the Waynesville traffic during the Sauerkraut Festival.
Aircraft ownership among members is increasing. Dean Mowrey recently purchased a Cessna 182. It is based at Dayton Wright Brothers Airport (MGY). I have recently purchased a Cessna 172K and will be keeping it at Moraine Airpark (I73). Weather permitting I plan to fly to Sunday's meeting. Perhaps Dean and Bob can also fly into the meeting.
GPS's In addition to my 172 I have also purchased a Lowrance 2000C GPS. I believe that Keith Schneider has the same model in his Kitfox. Lots of features and a big screen. I plan on bringing it to the meeting also for a little show and tell. If anyone else has a portable GPS consider bringing it to the meeting

A Brief History of EAA Chapter 284
|
Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 284 was chartered at Highland County Airport, Hillsboro, Ohio in 1967. Sadly, after a few years it became inactive and dissolved as a chapter. In 1991 several employees of the air cargo carrier Airborne Express (who were EAA members) met at Doug Wright's home to discuss forming a new EAA chapter at Wilmington, Ohio. Further investigation through EAA National at Oshkosh revealed that it might be easier to reactivate EAA 284 and the decision was promptly made to do just that. Subsequent paperwork was filed and EAA 284 was reactivated in late 1991 with Doug Wright as its President. Finding a permanent home was a bit more trying. In the following months the Chapter met at a Methodist Church in Wilmington and back at the original home of Highland County Airport. Still, no place seemed to offer just the right formula of atmosphere and growth potential. The search for a suitable home continued.
Many of the charter members regularly flew out of a 2500 ft sod airport situated between Dayton and Cincinnati, operated by the Stewart family since 1946. Red Stewart Field (40I) specialized in taildragger instruction and rental, flying in classics such as the Cub, Champ, and Taylorcraft. It was just the kind of strip that reeked old time flying and grassroots aviation. Cub and Cathy Stewart graciously agreed to provide the reactivated EAA 284 a new home worthy of any EAA chapter.
In 1992 we hosted our first event - The EAA 284 Taildragger Fly-In. It has since become a regional favorite of all pilots. We have also restored an Aeronca Champ as part of the rental fleet at Stewart Field. We are proud to be part of a grassroots, barnstorming tradition here at Red Stewart Field and gladly welcome any and all to stop by and visit us.
As a local chapter of the EAA we try to do our part to further the cause of sport aviation and support the folks who support us. In the process we have a lot of fun, and that's what it's all about. Come on out and have seat on the "Liars Bench" with us, share a soda and a few tall tales. We'll listen and don't be surprised if we laugh. We like to say that we're: Dedicated to the spirit of aviation past, devoted to the future.
